I received a copy of Geometric Tools for Computer Graphics (ISBN 1558605940) recently, the new book by Philip J. Schneider and David Eberly. So far its looking like a remarkable desk reference. It covers a huge selection of 2D and 3D problems, including distance calculations, intersections, a variety of computational geometry topics, and plenty more. The joy is having them all in one place, with nice diagrams and explanations for easy reference. Like most good books, Geometric Tools isn't a step-by-step or how-to, its simply a massive, well-organized collection of handy material. Aside from Real-time Rendering (ISBN 1568811829), the only other graphics book that has lasted more than a little while on my desk is the Computer Graphics Handbook: Geometry and Mathematics (ISBN 0831110023), by Michael E. Mortenson. Again, not a how-to, but rather a straight-forward reference book with problems/solutions clearly outlined. Its a little outdated in its organization compared to some of the more comprehensive books coming out, but still a very handy reference. Well, it looks like Geometric Tools might be taking its place for now, which I suppose is actually good timing given that my copy of CGH is falling apart at the spine and filled to the margins with notes and drawings. |
